Lakewood Middle School
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Lakewood Families,
As we wrap up 2024 and head into 2025, it seems a natural time to reflect on how far we have come and how far we still need to go. Last school year, concerns of bullying and racism were consistently raised and this school year we have made a concerted effort to remedy these areas.
Highlights of our year so far include:
- “New Student Welcome” before Open House – new students and their families had an opportunity to meet LMS students and staff and begin to form relationships
- Class Cup Challenge – In an effort to build camaraderie and community, we are competing by grade levels for mid-year prizes and a final end-of-year incentive
- Super U Challenge – Assembly where we learned about kindness in a fun format
- Start with Hello – Week of lessons and activities on inclusivity
- Racism Assembly – Whole school assembly where we discussed racism and challenged students to be allies, advocates, and antiracists
- SRO (Student Resource Officer) Presentations on Bullying
- Student Lunch Groups – I meet with small groups of students during lunch to elicit feedback periodically throughout the year
- Parent Advisory Council on Bullying – Met in November to discuss bullying at LMS
- Kindness Counts Week – Students earned yellow tickets for small acts of kindness and were able to earn prizes
- World Kindness Day – We watched the documentary “Bully”, discussed how to make LMS a kinder place, and participated in several kindness-themed activities
- Discipline – We have made updates to our discipline process, including increasing the severity of disciplinary actions for bullying, racial harassment, and physical violence (fighting)
We are far from a perfect place but we are striving to fulfill our mission that Lakewood be A FAMILY-FRIENDLY, INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY DEDICATED TO EMPOWERING EVERY LEARNER THROUGH INNOVATION, COLLABORATIVE PROBLEM-SOLVING AND CONSISTENT COMMUNICATION.
We will continue to make strides in 2025 towards kindness and inclusivity. Thank you for the efforts you are making at home and the feedback you provide us throughout the process.
If you have a question or a concern at any time, please feel free to email me at jcorum@lakewoodlocal.k12.oh.us.
