End of School Year Message from Superintendent Gleichauf

Lakewood Schools Community,

I hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! As we close another school year, I wanted to acknowledge and celebrate some of our students’ achievements from these last few weeks of the year.

Let me start by saying congratulations to the Class of 2022! Commencement was a fantastic event and these seniors accomplished great things (see below). I also attended one of C-TEC’s graduation ceremonies last week. Lakewood had 32 LHS seniors receive their career passports and other various awards.

For the rest of our District’s students, the last nine weeks of school was a time to finish strong and look forward to new opportunities. We had many new members inducted into the LHS chapter of National Honor Society, the LMS chapter of National Junior Honor Society, and C-TEC students into the National Technical Honor Society. We partnered with MPW Industrial Services (MPW) to offer three paid internships to current juniors at LHS. Volunteers from across the county collaborated with LMS teachers, LHS students and the Lakewood Education Foundation to conduct another Reality Store event, which provides a financial literacy experience for our 7th and 8th grade students. Several of our 6th grade students at LMS brought home the hardware from the regional history/geography bee.

In addition to their everyday classroom success, our students have achieved great extracurricular success outside of school. The LHS spring musical, High School Musical, was a huge hit and entertained young and old alike. And bravo to our LMS drama and choir classes on their performance of Disney’s Lion King, Kids! Our high school Concert Choir, A Capella Choir, Concert Band and Symphonic Band out on a wonderful concert in early May, and our Lancer Marching Band performed at Cedar Point mid-month. Our 5th grade band at JIS also had an amazing spring concert in front of a live audience

Congratulations are due to our athletic successes from the Spring; the Varsity Softball team finished as District Runner Up; both Boys and Girls Varsity Track & Field finished as LCL Cardinal League Runners Up, with several LCL Champions in individual events, a District Champions in Discus, many Regional Qualifiers, and at the time of this letter – a State Qualifier (Landry Driskell in Discus)! We also had many Baseball and Softball players receive All-LCL Honors – five 1st Team, five 2nd Team and two Honorable Mention.

These are just a sample of our students’ work and activities! I am always very proud of our students’ academic and extracurricular achievements, but I am even more proud of their service and charity – we have many school groups across the District who spearhead fundraisers, food and clothing drives, humanitarian relief and service projects. This dedication of time and talent, as well as monetary donation, is impressive and wonderful!

I want to thank everyone who shared feedback as part of our community survey this Spring. Your valuable participation will shape our strategic planning process to begin next Winter.

Lastly, the District is offering Lancer Summer Institute again this year, June 6 through July 1. For our K-8 students, this program provides an opportunity to continue working toward mastery of skills, with a focus on reading, writing and math. The program also provides high school students a chance to recover credits missed or not achieved during the school year. Contact your child’s school if you have questions or still would like to sign up.

Thank you for your unwavering support of our Lakewood Lancer students, staff members and programs throughout the 2021-2022 school year. Have a great Summer and we will see you back in the Fall!

It’s Lancer Time!

Sincerely,
Dr. Mark Gleichauf
