In April, Lakewood High School (LHS) partnered with MPW Industrial Services (“MPW”) to offer three paid internships to juniors at Lakewood High School. MPW has now hired three LHS rising senior students to fill the internship roles. The students began their internships in the last couple of weeks and will work 12 hours per week for the next 30 weeks.
Jim Tyznik, Director of Corporate Human Resources for MPW, said, “We received many applications from great candidates for these three internships, and we’re excited to get started with the interns chosen. We hope to provide an educational and inspiring experience for these three young people, while possibly validating their potential career plans. We’ll also be evaluating them for a possible future full-time employment with us.”
Brea Ballard will work in MPW’s Accounting/Finance department, in the Corporate Accounting area. She will work with a MPW mentor to learn more about the accounting and finance function, utilize MPW’s accounting systems, including data entry, prepare schedules/reports using Microsoft Excel, and assist with any filing/administrative tasks that need to be completed.
Grayce Keffer will work in MPW’s Fabrication/Warehouse area, where she will work with a MPW mentor to read blueprints and design drawings according to project scope, learn about fabrication, welding and various types of equipment operations, operating equipment in a safe manner using all the safety requirements to comply with OSHA and company policies, assist with any filing/administrative tasks that need to be completed, and perform other duties as needed.
Cole Scarborough will work in MPW’s Engineering department, assisting with any tasks that need to be completed and experiencing a broad range of Engineering responsibilities through observation and hands-on training. He will work with a MPW mentor to learn more about Engineering, water purification and industrial processes, study and create new technology drawings for product improvements or development, assist with any filing/administrative tasks that need to be completed, and perform other duties as needed.
Lakewood Superintendent Dr. Mark Gleichauf added, “These internships will provide students with exposure to different career options at MPW, and gain insight into the skills and responsibilities in these disciplines to help them determine, or solidify, a career path. Again, we are grateful to MPW for their partnership on this program and their dedication to workforce readiness for our community’s young people.”
