We didn’t have to look far to find Coach Don Thorp’s replacement as the head coach of the baseball program, pending board approval at the December 8th Board of Education meeting. Chuck Davis has served as our assistant varsity baseball coach since 2015. Coach Davis has been a part of Lakewood’s long-standing tradition of excellence in baseball. He played on the state championship team in 1994 and was the assistant coach for the 2016 district championship team and the 2021 District Runner-up team. In his role as an assistant coach, he was responsible for coaching third base for the varsity team, helping Coach Thorp run practices during the season, and organizing and running off-season workouts. Davis has coached baseball for the last 15 years at various levels from t-ball to varsity.
When asked about this coaching opportunity, Coach Davis said, “I am very excited for the opportunity to lead the Lakewood Baseball program and I look forward to the challenge of continuing the long-standing tradition created by Coach Don Thorp.”
Davis sums up his coaching philosophy as, “do the little things right and the big things will happen.” He focuses on preparing players for every possible situation during practice, so they are ready to act when things happen in a game. He believes that players are more successful when they are confident in their ability to handle situations and confidence comes from preparation.
Athletic Director, Jason Lee shared, “We’re excited to continue Coach Thorp’s legacy by passing the baton to Coach Davis. Coach Davis has a strong focus on our student-athletes, understanding the importance of balancing academics, athletics and community service. We know that he will continue to build the program and serve our kids well.”
