Student Data Privacy

Student Data Privacy at Lakewood Local School District

At Lakewood Local School District, protecting the privacy and security of our students’ data is one of our top priorities. We understand that in today’s digital world, families want to know how their children’s information is collected, used, and safeguarded. That’s why we follow strict guidelines, including those outlined in Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29), to ensure student data is handled responsibly and securely.

What is Ohio Senate Bill 29?

Ohio Senate Bill 29 is a law designed to protect the privacy of student data. Under this law:

  • School districts must safeguard student personally identifiable information (PII) from unauthorized access or misuse.

  • Any third-party vendors or service providers that receive student data must follow specific data protection and privacy standards.

  • School districts are required to be transparent with families about the ways student data is used and protected.

Lakewood Local School District complies fully with SB29 and continually updates our practices to meet or exceed these legal requirements.

Where Parents Can Find Third-Party Vendors and Data Privacy Agreements

At Lakewood Local School District, we are committed to transparency in how student data is protected and used. We work with educational technology providers and service vendors to support learning, and we want families to have easy access to information about these partnerships.

Parents and guardians can:

  • View a list of third-party vendors and service providers that have access to student data.

  • Review the data privacy agreements that describe how these providers safeguard student information.

You can find this information on our district’s page through the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC):

Through our partnership with the Student Data Privacy Consortium (https://privacy.a4l.org/), Lakewood Local School District ensures that all agreements with vendors meet strict data privacy standards and are available for public review.

When and Why Parents May Receive a Data Privacy Notification

At Lakewood Local School District, we provide parents and students with direct and timely notice about how student data is used, in compliance with Ohio Senate Bill 29 (SB29).

You may receive a Student Data Privacy Notification when:

  • A curriculum, testing, or assessment technology provider has a contract with our district that affects your child’s educational records. (Published on District Website)

  • The district or a technology provider needs to access or monitor a school-issued device under specific circumstances, such as:

    • To provide instruction, technical support, or exam proctoring (with advance notice)

    • If the device is missing or stolen

    • To respond to an immediate threat to life or safety

    • As required by law or for participation in federal or state funding programs

    • When access is granted by a judicial warrant

In these cases, we will notify you:

  • By August 1 of each school year about any relevant technology provider contracts that affect educational records. This notice will identify the technology provider, the records involved, and contact details for questions.

  • Within 72 hours if a school-issued device assigned to your child was accessed, including what features were accessed (for example, location tracking or web activity) and the reason for access. If immediate notice would pose a safety risk, we will provide notice once that risk has passed.

This notification process ensures transparency and keeps you informed about how your child’s data is protected and used to support their education.
