Lakewood Local Schools has named Deputy Caleb Brown as the new School Resource Officer (SRO). His start date is November 6.
Lakewood Local Schools has named Deputy Caleb Brown as the new School Resource Officer (SRO), replacing Deputy Joe Harvey. His start date is November 6. Deputy Harvey is leaving Lakewood Schools for another opportunity in the Licking County Sheriff's Office.
Deputy Brown was raised in Licking County and is a current resident. Both of his parents and several other family members were teachers or school administrators, including his mother, Annette Brown, who taught her entire 36-year career at Lakewood Local School District. He graduated from Licking Valley High School in 2013, where he played football and lacrosse. During and after his high school years, he worked with school-age children, coaching and training in athletics. He attended Zane State College and graduated from the Basic Peace Officers Training Academy at Central Ohio Technical College, Newark. Upon graduation, he earned the Top Shot Award, Academic Excellence Award, and Officer Thomas W. Cottrell Jr. Award for Character and Dedication. Deputy Brown has been employed by the Licking County Sheriff’s Office patrol division for three years.
“I am eager to join the team at Lakewood Schools. In my time with the Licking County Sheriff’s Office, I have become adept at using my interpersonal communication skills to build meaningful relationships with citizens and know that will help me build a cohesive and productive relationship with the staff and students here,” said Deputy Brown. “My goals for the SRO role are to help Lakewood Administrators and school staff members prepare for/mitigate any issues that may arise and establish an environment in which faculty and students feel safe and are able to achieve their highest potential each day.”
Deputy Brown and his wife married last year and are expecting their first child within the next few weeks. Deputy Brown is a fan of both collegiate and professional sports, and in his free time, enjoys attending Columbus Blue Jackets, Ohio State Football, and Columbus Clippers games. He also enjoys working on carpentry/woodworking projects, being outdoors, and spending time with family and friends.
“We are pleased to welcome Deputy Brown to our District,” said Lakewood Superintendent Mark Gleichauf. “Our SROs are a critical part of our school safety strategy, and they help us in so many ways, including conducting presentations for students on bullying and the safe use of social media, collaborating with administrators when instances occur to help determine actions to take and conducting safety training, and serving as deterrents to negative behavior from those on or off campus by their presence.”
Added Dr. Gleichauf, “I also would like to thank Deputy Harvey for his six years of service to our schools in the SRO role. We wish him the best in his new role.”
