Power on/off and sleep

Turning the Chromebook on
The Chromebook will automatically turn on a few seconds after you open the lid. If the lid is already open and the Chromebook is off or asleep, tap the power button:

Turning the Chromebook off
When finished with the Chromebook, power the device off and place it on the charger. To completely power off the Chromebook, you may either:
  • Press and HOLD the power button until the screen turns off.
  • Click on the clock menu, and click the power/shutdown button:

Putting the Chromebook to sleep
Closing the Chromebook's lid will put the device into "sleep" mode. The Chromebook still consumes power while asleep. To wake the Chromebook, open the lid.

WiFi and Internet

Chromebooks require an Internet connection to function. If you turn on the device in a new location, you will be prompted to join a WiFi network before you are able to proceed.

Troubleshooting

Chromebook won't charge or turn on

Is the charger working?
When connected to the power adapter, you should see a small light near the charging port. If you do not, try another power outlet and make sure that the power cable is completely plugged-in to the power brick and the Chromebook.

Perform a hardware reset
This procedure will restart the device and reset the Chromebook's hardware.
  1. Turn off the Chromebook if it is on.
  2. Press and hold the Refresh  button.
  3. Tap and release the Power button while still holding the Refresh button.
  4. Continue holding the Refresh button until the Chromebook displays a white screen with the Chrome logo.

A website reports that Flash is not available

Flash is an old multimedia technology from Adobe. On some devices, Google has disabled Flash in their Chrome browser. Some of the LVA learning modules still utilize Flash. To enable Flash, perform the following steps:

Web pages/sites do not load properly, or Chrome OS reports storage space is low

Clear browsing data
  1. Open the Chrome browser.
  2. Click the More button at the top-right of the screen.
  3. Click More tools Clear browsing data
  4. Select All time, make sure all three boxes are checked, and click Clear data:

Remove extensions
Extensions are software add-ons that can change the behavior of the Chrome browser. Some extensions contain adware that interfere with Chrome. Uninstall non-Google extensions when troubleshooting problems with Web pages:
  1. Open the Chrome browser.
  2. Click More Extensions.
  3. Select extensions and turn it off, or click Remove.

Free up storage space by deleting files
Chromebooks have very limited storage. Remove downloaded files to free up storage space:
  1. Click the Launcher  button at the bottom-left of the screen.
  2. Click the up arrow  to show all apps.
  3. Open the Files  app.
  4. Click Downloads and select all downloaded files. Click Delete  and click the blue Delete button to confirm.

Sites do not load properly, unable to login, other problems - Update ChromeOS

Google often fixes many problems in each update of the ChromeOS software that powers your Chromebook. Updated software is released every six weeks, and sometimes even more often. As of this writing, your device should be running AT LEAST ChromeOS version 84.

Update ChromeOS
  1. Login to the device, with either the "Quick Login" for your grade level, or by entering a Lakewood Google username/password.
  2. Click on the clock to open the menu.
  3. Click on the gear icon to open the Settings
  1. On the left side of the settings screen, click About ChromeOS. It's all the way at the bottom.
  1. Click Check for updates.
  1. If an update is available it will install automatically. This will take several minutes.

  1. Click Restart when prompted.

Unable to login (LVA students grades KG, 1, 2, and 3) - Performing a full reset

LVA students in Kindergarten, first, second, or third grade should NOT have to enter a username and password to sign in to the Chromebook. Chromebooks for students who do not have a Google login should see a "quick login" screen that will automatically start up the Chrome browser:


Clear all data and reset
This procedure will force the Chromebook to retrieve the correct settings from Lakewood's Google system.
  1. If the Chromebook is on, press and hold the Power  button until it shuts off.
  2. Press and hold the ESC and Refresh  keys.
  3. Tap and quickly release the Power  button while still holding the ESC and Refresh  keys.
  1. Continue holding the ESC and Refresh  keys until you see the recovery screen:
  1. Press and hold the CTRL button and tap the letter D.
  2. Press ENTER. The Chromebook will restart.
  3. Press SPACE then press ENTER. The Chromebook will restart a second time.
  4. You will see the "welcome" screen:
  1. Click "Let's go" and proceed to connect to your home's WiFi.
  2. The Chromebook should automatically continue past the "Enterprise Enrollment" screen. If you are prompted for a username and password for Enterprise Enrollment, please contact Lancer tech support.

Login Details

K-5 Login Information:
  • User Name: first initial + last name
  • Password: LVAStudent
  • School: lakewood local (very important!)
6-12 Login Information:
  • Account: LLSD3.5
  • User Name: first initial + last name
  • Password: student ID#
Note: If there are multiple family members in the 6-12 program, it will be the first 2 letters of your first name + your last name
