Board of Education

Lakewood's Mission

Lakewood School District, in a unified partnership with families and community, is committed to providing all students maximum opportunities to develop as life-long learners and productive citizens.

A Message from the Board of Education

We believe quality public education and good Board service should be conducted in an ethical manner with traditional principles such as honesty, trust, fairness and integrity. As Board members, we are guided by Ohio law, the Ohio School Boards Association's Code of Ethics (below) and the National School Board Association's Code of Conduct (below).
We strive to support our school district, its leadership, teachers, staff, students and their families in every way we possibly can. We wish for our public meetings to be both welcoming and productive. Below, we have provided information we think will help answer some of the most frequently asked questions by those who join us in meetings. We hope you find it helpful. As always, thank you for engaging in the education of our community's children.

Board Meetings

Board meetings are open to the public and community members are encouraged to attend. We meet on the second Wednesday of each month in the Lakewood High School Library (9331 Lancer Rd. S.E., Hebron, OH 43025) at 6:30 P.M. unless otherwise noted. The board occassionally conducts special meetings when district matters need immediate attention.

All notice of meetings, meeting agendas and approved Board Minutes are available on this page and also from the Treasurer's Office. Social media and local news outlets are also utilized for public notification purposes.
Various committee meetings are also scheduled periodically. These meetings typically comprise of two Board members, district leadership and others as applicable. Notice of these meetings are on this page, however, agendas and meeting minutes are not available unless noted.

Public Participation

We welcome community member participation at meetings. Those who wish to address the board will be asked to stand and begin by telling the Board their name and address. Public participation is scheduled in each meeting's agenda and may also be allowed when a Board member invites additional commentary.
Comments are limited to three minutes. Because we wish to hear from everyone who would like to comment, we ask that no participant speak more than once on the same topic until all others who wish to speak on that topic have been heard. We encourage residents to bring up issues that affect the district as a whole. Board meetings are not the appropriate place to discuss individual or building-level concerns, or for personnel issues. Also, out of respect to students and staff, the board does not allow personal attacks. Those who violate the policy will be asked to immediately conclude their statement.
In general, most public participation statements will be recorded and followed up with individually by the Superintendent or appropriate school or Board offical after the meeting. Because we do not have prior knowledge of speakers or topics, please do not be offended if we are unable to offer an immediate response to a person's comments or questions.

Executive Sessions

Ohio law permits board members to hold limited subject private discussions during a meeting. Executive sessions allow members to discuss personnel matters, property purchases, possible legal action, employment negotiations, security arrangements and items the law says must be kept confidential. Because Ohio law says all votes must be cast in public, executive sessions are for discussion purposes only.

The Sunshine Law

Ohio's Sunshine Law (Ohio Revised Code Section (RC) 121.22) requires public bodies, including school boards of education to hold public meetings, provide notices of when those meetings will occur, keep minutes of those meetings, permit executive sessions for discussion of limited subjects and establish penalties for violations of the law.
